Week of Women 2017

March 27, 2017

What is Week of Women?

Week of Women, presented annually by Texas Orange Jackets, is a series of events that seeks to empower women. Texas Orange Jackets serve as official hosts to the University, embodying the tenets of service, leadership, and scholarship. We aim to engage the community in honoring women’s accomplishments, discussing women’s issues and stereotypes, and celebrating the strength and power of the women in our lives. We hope that this week energizes you, inspires you, and challenges you to build new dimensions to your definition of “woman.”

What Are the Events?

This year we have a wide variety of empowering events organized by the chair of the Week of Women committee, Sofia Aranha, and her supporting committee members. All of these events will be opportunities to learn, empower yourself and other women. The events are:

Be the Change with MJ Hegar

Monday, March 27 | 7 PM | Shirley Bird Perry Ballroom

Texas Orange Jackets is proudly partnering with Campus Events + Entertainment Distinguished Speakers to host Major Mary Jennings Hegar for the annual Texas Tea. Major Hegar was commissioned into the Air Force through ROTC at The University of Texas in 1999. In 2012, Major Hegar filed suit against the Secretary of Defense asserting that the Combat Exclusion Policy was unconstitutional.  In 2013, the Secretary of Defense repealed the Policy effective immediately.

VIP Distinguished Speaker Series with Debra Polishook

Tuesday, March 28 | 5:30 PM | SAC Auditorium

Texas Orange Jackets and the Undergraduate Business Council are excited to host Debra Polishook, Group Chief Executive of Accenture Operations, through the VIP Distinguished Speaker Series. One of five women on Accenture’s 20-person executive team, Polishook will share her leadership experience, her role in Accenture’s technology and cloud operations strategy, and her success as a woman executive.

Project Period: “Let’s Talk, Period.”

Wednesday, March 29 | 7 PM | Lucky Lab Coffee

The Fall 2016 Tap Class of Texas Orange Jackets addresses the stigma surrounding all things menstruation. Project Period launches with “Let’s Talk, Period.” - an open Q&A discussion busting period myths and tackling taboo questions. The Project aims to supply personal hygiene products to high-traffic buildings across campus, collected through a two week campus-wide drive. All students are encouraged to participate through product donations, interactive tabling events, and the Project Period social media campaign.

Invest in Action

Thursday, March 30 | 6 PM | Union Quadrangle Room

Texas Orange Jackets is proud to join Invest in Texas in presenting "Invest in Action" during Week of Women 2017. A panel of legislators and campus administrators will discuss sexual assault prevention with focus on how UT students can take action to prevent sexual violence. This event also provides students with the opportunity to provide feedback to the university regarding current campus strategies. Join us for an evening of meaningful discussion as we take steps towards a safer community.
