Tap Project 2015-2016: Food SecureUT
From September 30, 2015 to April 5, 2016, the Orange Jackets Tap Class worked tremendously hard to better the campus at the University of Texas. This year, the 31 member class decided to tackle the issue of low food security on campus. This issue is present on the 40 acres as some students do not know where their next meal is coming from due to the steadily increasing costs of tuition, textbooks, and other miscellaneous fees.
Through this project, we partnered with Student Emergency Services (SES) as well as the Division of Housing and Food Services (DHFS) to find a way to give aid to students in the form of Dine-in-Dollars so that the students could have access to food on campus. Fortunately, we were able to find a way to make this idea a reality! We are still working out the details, but eventually donors may give earmarked cash or check to the fund within SES made out specifically for the use of aiding students with Dine-in-Dollars.
We as a Tap class only thought it appropriate to give the first donation to this fund we brainstormed and helped establish, so we held multiple events to help raise funds and awareness of the issue of low food security on campus.
The Tap Class partnered with Phi Delt and Blazers to serve burgers and grilled cheeses on the SAC lawn for donations at smaller events called Chill ‘n Grill. On the weekend, we also served popsicles in West Campus for donations. On April 5, 2016, Food SecureUT, our main event was held on Gregory Plaza and featured artists such as Punjabbawockeez, Giggle Pants, Fuse A Capella and the Longhorn Singers. During this big event, representatives from SES talked about their presence on campus as well as the issue of low food security. We also presented a viewing of “Thought for Food”, a documentary highlighting the issue of hunger.
We are very pleased with how the events turned out and how this project has become a reality! Many thanks to our sponsors, Adrienne and Jen, the Executive Board of Orange Jackets, and our Tap Trainers, Allison and Bethany!
We are still accepting donations in any way you feel inclined to give to this fund! Donations may be given online here. We appreciate any and all support given! Hook ‘em!
