Week of Women 2016
What is Week of Women?
Each spring the Texas Orange Jackets hosts Week of Women—a weeklong event for all individuals who identify as women—regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, assigned sex, gender expression, or religious affiliation. By focusing this year’s theme on “Empowering from Within,” we hope that we can build our fellow women up by hearing one another’s successes and struggles, discussing ways to make positive change, and growing together as women in community.
What Events Are There?
This year we have a wide variety of empowering events organized by the chair of the Week of Women committee, Danielle Smith, and her supporting committee members. All of these events will be opportunities to learn, empower yourself, and empower other women and are sure to be
enriching experiences. But a few events that may be worth additional emphasis:
Monday, Feb 29 | 5pm | SAC Ballroom South Happy Hour w/ Fearless Leadership Institute
Happy Hour is an event co-hosted and sponsored by the Fearless
Leadership Institute. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy
conversations in an open environment with cookies and wonderful
company. The keynote speaker for the event will be Cierra
Campbell,
Tuesday, March 1 | 12pm | Speedway Plaza Women Can Do it Too
This event will focus on teaching women basic, essential car
maintenance and repair skills such as changing a flat tire, performing
an oil change, and replacing wiper blades. These are skills
traditionally taught to men at a young age, but women are frequently
left out of these lessons. It’s our intention to close the gap.
Gigglepants, the improve troupe will also make an appearance
between 1:45 and 2:15, so be sure to come out!
Wednesday, March 2 | 7pm | Union Theater E + E Movie Screening of “Half the Sky”
There will be a free screening of the film, “Half the Sky” followed by a
brief facilitation and discussion afterwards. The film focuses on the
issues of sex trafficking, maternal mortality, sexual violence,
microfinance, and girl’s education. The film is sure to be eye opening
for all viewers—we encourage you to watch with us!
Week Long Donation Drive
In addition to the wonderful events above and the remaining events this
week (see full schedule below), all week we will be collecting supplies to
donate to families at SafePlace Austin, a shelter for abused families and
children to find rest and safety from domestic violence. Drop off locations
for donations will be in Gregory Gym, the Multicultural Engagement
Center, and each of our events during the week!
Preferred items include: Feminine toiletries of all kinds, Baby bottles, Diapers, Baby formula, Baby accessories, Walmart and HEB gift cards
